Even with the roomiest of vehicles, packing the car for a long trip can quickly turn into a frustrating game of Tetris. CURT cargo carriers are a simple yet effective solution for maximizing the storage area of your vehicle.
The CURT roof rack cargo carrier is a roomy and versatile cargo carrier with a lightweight design and easy installation. It features a simple two-piece assembly and mounts to most styles of roof rack crossbars. With its strong steel construction and durable E-coat and black powder coat finish, it easily stands up to the tough trails and long miles ahead. One of the key advantages to the CURT roof rack carrier is its extension option. With the extension piece installed, this cargo rack goes from a little over ten square feet of storage room to an impressive 16 square feet, providing a lot of extra room for storing bulkier items. The roof rack cargo carrier readily accepts a CURT cargo bag or cargo net to get you packed up and on your way with less hassle.
Love the size but installation is more difficult than it needs to be. As others have mentioned the ubolt attaching to the cross bars are excessively long. This makes taking it on and off a rather bear because you are turning the knobs forever. Second, you run a significant risk of punching a hole through your luggage or other items due to the bold protruding so high into the basket. In addition, be very careful when assembling the basket as it is easy to over tighten and strip the screws. Should be easier and more fail safe than how it is currently designed
quality of rack tubing is good as long as u stay within the load limit. I lost a couple of bolts and replacement is just a phone call. I have a black Xterra Off Road and the cargo basket looks like it belongs on it. good way to distribute some of the weight. We'll see how long the basket holds up during if I leave it on,
I bought this product because it was a good price and I liked its size. The basket was easy to put together and easy enough to install. However, it faded quickly and right at a year it started weeping a black liquid on the top of my truck. I called the 1-800 number and their first question is do you remove the basket when you're not using it? It's not designed to be permanently installed. Its says not for permanent installation in the instructions, not in the product description where it should be.
I'm sorry, I thought I bought a roof rack not a truck accessory that takes approximately 30 minutes to remove and install. I will admit, they made it right and sent me a replacement free of charge. However, I will be selling it shortly and I will make sure that whoever buys it knows up front that it is not for permanent installation so they don't have to look for that tidbit in the bottom of the instructions.
Great product one downside the mounting u bolts are rusting after 3 months of use. And they take forever to get on and off. Mounting brackets could use very much improvement.
Unfortunately I had a hard time with the locking nuts and had two of them breaking on me. For some reason they were to tight to hand screw after the first 1/4 of the way down... eventually they gave up and cracked.
Luckily I was left with the nut which eventually made its way down with an adjustable wrench after awhile.
But then I also notice the "U" metal shaped screw bracket thingy that holds the other pieces to the basket were sticking up a bit - ready to poke something thru.
Not a deal breaker at all though. The roof rack system is rock solid! Just the details :)
Called in today to see about a replacement bracket for my cargo rack (that I stripped out). I talked to Mark in technical support. It was one of the friendliest conversations I've ever had with customer support. He was glad to help me out with a replacement part. Just the customer service alone makes me glad that I chose to buy a Curt Roof Rack.
Great Item but I would not use locking nuts supplied. The locking nuts that you use to secure the u bolts have four wings on them for hand tightening. You can not use a socket wrench to tighten these. I'm sure they are made this way, so that you do not need tools to mount this basket on your car. Unfortunately, they are super-difficult to hand tighten. I had bruises on my hand from turning these things with my hand. I would go to the hardware store and buy regular locking nuts to use in lieu of the winged nuts that are supplied. I still have the basket mounted, but am not looking forward to removing it because of this.
Great product and even better with the extension. it went from the standard 41 inches to 60. fits perfect on my 4 runner. The only thing is the extension doesn't have mounting brackets so you'l have put the brackets close to the unions which make it less than ideal when loading the Rack. Over all, it's great and looks even better.
In over 40 years of off-roading, at one time or another, I've owned almost every kind of roof rack / Cargo Basket... call it what you want, I've owned most brands, Smittybuilt & Thule to Yakima, and I'll tell you, for the money, you can't beat the Curt Roof Rack and extension.
And shipping... ordered it on a Monday morning, it was setting by my front door when I got home from work Wednesday night.
The only thing I didn't care for was the length of the 1/4-28 threaded hold down brackets. they stick up way higher than the bottom of the basket... ready to poke a hole in anything unlucky enought to land on top of one of them. Since I don't plan on removing the rack anytime soon, an air-grander and cutoff disk took care of the problem in short order.
I highly recommend this product.
