Part of towing responsibly is making sure your trailer lights are working properly. Whether you have just installed a new custom wiring harness or are trying to locate the cause of an electrical problem, CURT connector testers are great for testing tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, ground connections and other electrical components on your vehicle.

A connector tester works by plugging into the connector socket on your vehicle and responding to the various electrical signals produced by pushing the brake pedal, signaling a turn, turning on the running lights and so on. When the socket is getting proper power, the tester's various LEDs will light up corresponding to each wire in the connector. Testing your vehicle-side socket is essential after installing a new custom vehicle-to-trailer wiring harness and is highly recommended every time you hitch up to tow. Also, if you are experiencing electrical problems with your trailer, a CURT tester will be able to tell you whether the problem is rooted in your vehicle's electrical system or if your trailer needs some rewiring.

All CURT connector testers come with LED lights to be bright and long-lasting. Wire testers are available for 4-way flat, 5-way flat, 6-way round and 7-way RV blade connectors. This particular electrical tester fits a 4-way flat socket and comes with quality plastic construction.

    user guide, my observed behavior

For those here who asked for a user guide, I didn't find one, but here's my observed behavior, 2016 Subaru Outback with factory wiring harness, I think.
Looking at the device oriented with the pins toward you (opposite of how it will be when plugged in)
    1. Car on, headlights not on, nothing lit.
    2. Headlights on, left most bulb lit. This stays lit during the following three tests.
    3. Left turn signal, middle light on.
    4. Right turn signal, right light on.
So, just know that the middle light is the left signal.
    5. Brake lights, both middle and right light on.

Hope this helps. This seemed to cover all the cases I knew to check once I connected to the trailer.

    Functions well but…

The unit does exactly what it is made to do. Typically used by rental stores to verify your trailer wiring is working to remove that piece of liability. If you but the CURT converter, this is a must have because the converter can not be tested with a modern volt meter. Not sure if it’s putting the voltage at to high of a frequency but even when setting your vm to give you a max reading you get odd readings. But this seems to test fine.

No, would it kill them to put a “L” and “R” into the mold so that you know what led is for what? Also, what is the 3rd LED for? Subtract one star for stupidity.

    Tester usage

All this tester does is tell you have power to a bulb in the tester & whether it works. Only real way to test wiring is to connect your trailer plug to your auto & try.
Bulbs either flashes, stay on continuous or not at all. Don't know which bulb is supposed to light for the respective demand for the trailer. Without a instruction guide it is a waste of money.

    58260 Tester

agree with the first review. Would be nice to have some instructions like a picture showing which light is which. My test did not get any lights for tail running lights. signals and brakes light up so not sure why no indication for tail lights.

    Which light is which???

I'm sure this tester is a wonderful product. But it's not good for much if you don't already know what each LED is supposed to correspond to. Yes, I can tell if one lights up when the turn signal is on, etc. What I can't tell is if the wiring has been installed properly, or is something wrong, like right turn signal wire connected to left, etc.

It appears to work, the price is very reasonable. But I can't give it any higher rating because no instructions are included or even available on the web site.
