WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm - www.P65Warnings.ca.gov

Rain, road grime and salt can deal a vicious blow to your trailer wiring, and it takes electrical components with an extra-thick shell to stand up to the elements. The CURT multi-function electrical converter is an advanced taillight converter that offers the ultimate in vehicle compatibility and weather resistance, giving you a reliable wiring connection any season of the year.

The advantage of the multi-function converter is its potted construction. The potted design seals the internal electrical components in a watertight enclosure and is filled with a solid compound to protect against impacts, vibrations and moisture for long-lasting use, even on the exterior of the vehicle. The converter also features our advanced surface mount technology (SMT), using smaller components mounted directly to the surface of the circuit board. This produces lower resistance, reduced heat generation, longer life cycles and higher reliability.

The CURT multi-function electrical converter comes with pigtail wires that are able to be spliced into two-wire, three-wire or PWM wiring system with combined stop and taillights. It converts any of these systems to a simple two-wire system, using a standard 4-way flat output, to be compatible with most trailer wiring. The converter is controlled using a microcontroller that is able to sense the current passing through it, allowing for quick reaction to dangerous conditions such as overload and short circuits. It also filters unwanted input signals to protect your wiring systems and uses a mere seven volts for low-voltage operation.

The CURT multi-function taillight converter is a heavy-duty electrical converter for virtually any vehicle-trailer combination. It comes with color-coded wires and an easy-to-read wiring guide, as well as a dust cover to protect the 4-way flat connector. This package also includes four snap locks for faster, more secure splicing. A powered converter wiring kit #55152 is also required for installation.

The right module for the car

This is the right module to install on a 2015 VW Golf Sportwagen TSI. All trailer lights work as they should and there are no issues to report.

Overall, I'm very satisfied, but I will give 4 stars because of the following minor details:
    1. Green wire from the module: I wish it was at least 6" longer so that I could properly rout and secure it to the chassis. The wire is covered; thus, it's not a major issue if it is a little loose.
    2. Black wire from the module: I wish is it was as long as the supplemental black wire they provide. I'm a person who believes in minimal number of connections (crimped or otherwise).
    3. Black wire gauges: The supplemental black wire is a different gauge than the module black wire gauge. Granted, for low voltage applications it may not matter much, but generally speaking, splicing different wire gauges may cause the splice to be a potential "heat source" (and hence another reason for the black wire to be one long piece).
    4. Black wire routing: all instructions and online videos show drilling of holes in the chassis and running the black wire under the car, into the engine, and connecting it into the battery. None of these ever explored internal routing and attachment to the under dash fuse box, which is what I opted for (and yes, it involves removing a few trim pieces). NOTE: The attachment to the internal fuse box requires a flat fuse contact from VW, which cost less than $1.00.
    5. Instructions: they are clear as long as you know what you're looking for and know how the car taillights work. Getting to understand how the tail lights work may not be that evident from the instructions and especially when the voltage meter isn't fast enough to detect the 1 second voltage change when the blinkers are on.

    Great Product

I install these units daily. Some vehicles, depending on their width, the mounting location of the module, and the routing of the wire may come up a tad bit short, but that's hardly a fault of the manufacturer for a generic kit. Curt does make many vehicle-specific kits as well. Everything you need for the installation is in the package, not sure why the previous reviewer said he needed the 55152 (power wire, fuse, fuse holder, butt connector, ring terminal, double sided stick pad and zip ties). You may want a few extra zip ties if your OCD compels you.

    Pass side wiring issue

The passenger tail light connector wiring is too short to reach across the van. Also, this kit requires you to order the 55152 too.
